Here Is What Building Lotus Looks Like Right Now

Building Lotus does not always look like a finished building.

Right now, building Lotus looks like showing up after work when I am tired. It looks like sending one email. It looks like posting one update. It looks like researching birth center requirements, reading about maternal health, talking to people, learning what I do not know yet, and taking one step at a time.

People may see the vision and think Lotus starts when the doors open.

But Lotus is already being built.

It is being built in the small steps.

It is being built in the conversations.

It is being built in the community connections.

It is being built in the planning, the questions, the corrections, the research, the meetings, and the moments when I keep going even when I do not have all the answers yet.

Lotus of Lakota Birthing Sanctuary is being created because families deserve to feel safe, heard, respected, protected, and supported through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

That is the heart of the vision.

But before there is a birth center, there has to be a foundation. And I am learning that the foundation is not just money. It is also trust. It is relationships. It is education. It is community. It is accountability. It is learning how to enter this work with humility and respect.

Right now, building Lotus looks like connecting with organizations already doing reproductive justice, maternal health, and birth equity work. It looks like asking where I can volunteer, where I can learn, and how I can show up before asking anyone to support what I am building.

It looks like joining spaces connected to birth center equity and learning from people who understand what it takes to build safer birth options.

It looks like writing blogs so people understand why this work matters.

It looks like sharing the reality that when birth services close or become harder to access, families feel it. Communities feel it. Mothers feel it. And we cannot wait until a crisis is too big to ignore before we start building better options.

It also looks like being honest about the process.

Lotus is still in development.

There is no pretending that everything is finished. There is no pretending that this work is easy. There is no pretending that a birth center appears overnight because someone has a dream.

This is real work.

It takes planning. It takes funding. It takes the right team. It takes clinical structure. It takes community relationships. It takes legal and regulatory research. It takes trust. It takes time.

And I am learning as I build.

I am also learning that people do not just want polished pictures. They want the real story. They want to know who is behind the vision. They want to know why it matters. They want to know what is actually happening.

So here is what is actually happening.

Lotus is growing.

The foundation is being organized. The message is becoming clearer. The community outreach has started. Conversations are beginning. Meetings are being scheduled. The vision is being shared. Support is being raised. The process is being documented.

Some days, building Lotus looks big.

Other days, it looks small.

Some days, it looks like a blog post.

Some days, it looks like a board conversation.

Some days, it looks like posting on social media so people remember Lotus is still moving.

Some days, it looks like recording a quick video before work because I want people to see the real process, not just the final result.

Some days, it looks like saying, “I do not know yet, but I am going to find out.”

That counts too.

Because building something real means being willing to start before everything is perfect.

Lotus is not just about opening a building.

Lotus is about creating a space where birth is honored, where mothers are not dismissed, where families feel supported, and where care sees the whole person — body, mind, spirit, family, and community.

That kind of work has to be built with intention.

It has to be rooted before it rises.

Right now, Lotus is in the root-building season.

The roots are the relationships.

The roots are the conversations.

The roots are the community trust.

The roots are the education.

The roots are the people who share, donate, encourage, advise, correct, connect, and believe.

Before the doors open, this is the work.

This is the part people may not always see, but it matters.

Every email matters.

Every meeting matters.

Every post matters.

Every donation matters.

Every introduction matters.

Every lesson matters.

Every small step matters.

Lotus is already becoming real through the work being done now.

Not all at once.

Not overnight.

But one step at a time.

And right now, that is what building Lotus looks like.

Lotus is coming.
